Irritable Bowel Syndrome with constipation (IBS-C) is a common functional bowel disorder characterized by abdominal pain, bloating, and defecation difficulty, often accompanied by anxiety and reduced quality of life. Although medications exist, many patients experience suboptimal relief and adverse effects, prompting interest in safe, mind–body–based adjunct therapies. Recent clinical evidence from a Harvard-led proof-of-concept trial demonstrated that a 7-week virtual Tai Chi program significantly improved symptoms in IBS-C patients, with 67% reporting reduced bloating, steadier bowel habits, and alleviated anxiety. Mean IBS Symptom Severity Scale scores decreased by 66 points, indicating statistically meaningful benefit. Additional studies show Tai Chi regulates autonomic balance, promotes vagal activation, and functions as dynamic meditation, enhancing homeostatic stability. Evidence further indicates benefits in rehabilitation, cardiovascular recovery, and—among young adults—enhancement of alpha-band EEG activity, suggesting improved relaxation and cognitive focus. Tai Chi thus represents a low-risk, accessible intervention that may complement conventional care for IBS patients and improve both gastrointestinal and emotional well-being.
